A traceroute is useful to discover certain problems within a network. This way it can become clear whether there occurs a delay on a specific route.

There are different ways of performing a traceroute; one could use the command tracert orpathping on a Windows operating system.

traceroute
A traceroute should be performed on the server/computer from which problems are encountered. One should take following steps:

Go to “Start > Run”. Type “cmd” in the text field and press Enter. You should see a black text box opening; the windows command prompt.(as an alternative you can use Windows Powershell )

Enter the following command: tracert www.mywebsite.com. Replace mywebsite.com with the website which you are trying to reach, or with the server’s ip address of which you are trying to determine the route.

U can receive the following kind of output(ofcourse this differs between locations):

Above article shows you the complete route the internet traffice should pass before reaching the server.

Similar but more detailed output can be obtained using pathping. U can perform a pathping following way:
Go to “Start > Run”. Type “cmd” in the text field and press Enter. You should see a black text box opening; the windows command prompt. Here you enter the folowing: pathping www.mywebsite.com,replacing mywebsite.com with the site or server you are encountering problems with.

You can send the output of above commands to support@nucleus.be for further analysis.
