What’s the difference between Infrastructure-as-a-Service, Platform-as-a-Service, Software-as-a-Service and Uptime-as-a-Service?
A step-by-step plan
A step-by-step plan for more uptime
KMDA chooses Uptime-as-a-Service
The Royal Society for Zoology of Antwerp VZW – in short: KMDA – is the umbrella organisation for Antwerp ZOO, Planckendael, the Serpentarium in Blankenberge, nature reserve De Zegge in Geel and the Queen Elisabeth hall. Besides this, KMDA is involved in scientific research and nature projects. For KMDA maximal uptime and a high level of performance are a must.
The challenge: maximal uptime and optimal performance
KMDA has many websites, internal platforms and cashier and ticketing systems. It is a complex and demanding ICT department. To manage this all, KMDA employs four people in ICT. “We realise that is not a large team”, says Kristof Van Bouwel ICT Manager for KMDA. “That is why we look for trustworthy partners we can rely on. We have all facets of a normal office environment and also the typical commercial aspects. Because of the different domains we work in, high performance and guaranteed uptime is essential to us.”
Our solution: Uptime-as-a-Service
KMDA uses Nucleus Uptime-as-a-Service. This means that they can count on managed cloud servers with maximal cloud security. The management, maintenance and permanent monitoring of the entire KMDA-infrastructure is fully taken care of by Nucleus. This implies maximal performance, security on all levels and 24/7 local support.
The result: maximal uptime & performance
In the past KMDA developed their websites together with different web builders, that included hosting in the contract. This had a couple of downsides: many different contracts, complex website management and different levels of performance. “When we made the switch to Nucleus, we didn’t need to worry about any of these things anymore”, states Kristof Van Bouwel. “All existing websites where transferred to a cloud environment, completely managed by Nucleus. We have uptime guarantees and get optimal performance, so we can focus on our core business. For us, Uptime-as-a-Service is a perfect concept!”
Case Antum – Uptime-as-a-Service
Antum, an IT-company based in Mechelen, launched an innovative online identification tool in 2017. The AntumID identifies people, without compromising their privacy. “Our solution allows you to verify your identity, without others knowing who you are”, says Jan Muyldermans, associate of Antum. “You go through a one-time setup with an eID-reader. Your details will be converted in an AntumID-code, that can also be used via mobile. By separating the ID-code from your personal details, you get a safe and anonymous way of identification.”
This year Antum releases the AntumID TrustPass. This allows you to prove your online identity to other online users. You decide for yourself what data you will pass on to the other user. The communication always uses your validated Antum ID. The good news is that the TrustPass can be used on every service on the internet, which makes it interesting for dating websites, social media chats, online marketplaces, e-mail, etc.
Antum received a lot of appreciation from the cabinet of Deputy Prime Minister Alexander De Croo. He stated that the AntumID is the most innovating solution to guarantee privacy.
The challenge: stable, scalable and highly secured hosting
When it comes to hosting, Antum’s demands are pretty strict. “Our platform is continuously exchanging data and constantly sends identifications. Downtime is not an option. The AntumID needs to be accessible at any given time, since it is used by various large e-commerce companies”, according to Jan Muyldermans.
On top of that Antum is ambitious and aims to grow steadily. “That is why our hosting solution needs to be able to scale with us. Classic hosting with fixed packages and volumes are a nightmare for a company like ours.”
Antum also takes GDPR into account. “When creating an AntumID, you are not sharing any information just yet. That is privacy by default. In addition you can always adapt what you share with whom.” Because of the nature of this data, safety is also a huge point of attention. “Storing every bit (or byte) of our data in Belgian datacenters is the only way to truly guarantee the privacy of our users.”
The solution: Uptime-as-a-Service
Antum chose Uptime-as-a-Service. This means that the Mechelen based company uses Nucleus’ managed cloud servers with maximal cloud security. The management, maintenance and permanent monitoring of the entire Antum-infrastructure is fully taken care of by Nucleus. This implies maximal performance, security on many levels and 24/7 local support. All with transparent and sharp service level agreements of course.
The result: maximal uptime and strong guarantees for security
The services and guarantees that accompany the Uptime-as-a-Service are for Antum the most important result: they are absolutely sure that everything is covered. “Maximal uptime and state-of-the-art security is constantly at our disposal. Besides these we know that the data privacy is in order and we can up- or downscale at any moment” according to Jan Muyldermans.

We strongly believe that Uptime-as-a-Service is the future of hosting. An ever-growing number of customers join us in that belief. KMDA, the umbrella organization of the Antwerp Zoo and Planckendael, and Antum, a start-up from Mechelen, recently testified about their choice for Uptime-as-a-Service.
